Key Takeaways
- ✓AI Accounting Distortion: CapEx-heavy AI spending creates a profit mirage — companies like Nvidia book revenues immediately while spenders capitalize and depreciate costs over 5–10 years, artificially inflating S&P profits. Investors should scrutinize earnings quality, not just headline numbers.
- ✓Leverage Eliminates Error Tolerance: Leopold Aschenbrenner's fund ran 5x leverage on AI momentum stocks, turning a market pullback into a forced fire sale to Citadel, collapsing from $45B to $10B in days. Leverage doesn't amplify skill — it eliminates the margin for being wrong.
- ✓US Leveraged ETF Risk Is Accelerating: US leveraged ETF assets jumped from $120B to $200B between April and today — a 70% surge — with single-stock ETFs now comprising over half of all listings, mirroring the exact structure that wiped out 70% of South Korean retail investors.
- ✓Fraud Surfaces on the Downside: Short-seller Jim Chanos warns that financial fraud follows boom cycles with a lag — nobody investigates at all-time highs, only after losses mount. Investors should treat prolonged bull markets as periods of accumulating hidden fraud risk, not validation.
What It Covers
Scott Galloway's Prof G Pod examines how leverage destroyed a 24-year-old's $45B AI fund, collapsed South Korea's market via single-stock ETFs, and why financial nihilism among young people mirrors a deepening loneliness crisis.

Notable Moment
Sam Harris reframes the entire pursuit of financial security: happiness cannot be achieved by accumulating enough — it can only exist in the present moment, making the "one more trade" mindset a psychological trap, not a strategy.

Welcome to the week from Prop g Media, where we break down what mattered and what it all means. I'm George Hahn, and it's Friday, August 7. Today, a hedge fund blew up. South Korea's stock market plunged 44%, and the AI trade found its floor. Then, why a generation locked out of financial security is taking bigger risks to get ahead. And finally, Sam Harris on what's actually worth your attention. Let's get into it. Last week, the debt that was propping up the AI boom finally came into view. This week, we found out what it does to people. On Friday's ProfG markets, Scott and Ed sat down with Jim Chanos, the short seller who called Enron and who now teaches a course on the history of financial fraud. The fraud cycle follows the financial cycle with a lag. And the longer the financial cycle goes on, the more amount of fraud is ultimately uncovered on the down cycle. So I've already dubbed this the golden age of fraud, and I suspect that when we're on the down part of this cycle, the bodies will float to the surface as they always do. But remember, the other the the corollary to that is is is the harshest prosecutor and the staunchest defense attorney of a company is its stock price. Nobody nobody goes after frauds at all time highs. They only go after them, after investors have lost money because these kinds of things are political. So why does the boom still look so …
