Key Takeaways
- ✓Psychological Analysis Process: Analysis etymologically means to loosen and separate. When experiencing intense emotions like anger at a partner, separate the immediate trigger from contaminating factors like workplace stress or childhood wounds to identify true sources of distress and respond appropriately.
- ✓Developmental Separatio: Infants emerge from oceanic oneness with mother into differentiation through saying no around age two. Creation myths mirror this pattern where initial unity must split apart to allow life and growth, as in Maori mythology where sky and earth separate to create space.
- ✓Affect Labeling Technique: Naming emotions with granular specificity like melancholic versus sad increases emotional regulation capacity. Parents naturally model this for toddlers by identifying feelings like frustration, which immediately changes the child's body state and provides psychological containment through language.
- ✓Jungian Typology Framework: Jung's four functions thinking, feeling, sensation, intuition combined with introversion and extroversion provide practical maps for differentiating personality components. This separates the gelatinous mass of undifferentiated experience into distinct, workable elements that can be consciously understood and integrated.
- ✓Holding Opposites Tension: After separating contradictory attitudes like loving and hating your job, hold both consciously without forcing resolution. This tension activates the transcendent function, allowing the unconscious to generate new orientations and solutions that ego alone cannot produce through willpower.
What It Covers
Three Jungian analysts explore separatio, the alchemical operation of differentiation and discrimination that enables psychological clarity by separating mixed elements, distinguishing consciousness from unconscious, and creating space for growth and transformation.

Notable Moment
A young adult trapped in profound depression for weeks experienced immediate liberation within twenty four hours after reading one sentence distinguishing depression from repressed anger, demonstrating how accurate naming and separation of psychological states can instantly free trapped energy and restore functioning.

Welcome to this Jungian life. Three good friends and Jungian analysts, Lisa Marciano, Deborah Stewart, and Joseph Lee invite you to join them for an intimate and honest conversation that brings a psychological perspective to important issues of the day. I'm Lisa Marciano, and I'm a Jungian analyst in Philadelphia. I'm Joseph Lee, and I'm a Jungian analyst in Virginia Beach, Virginia. I'm Deborah Stewart, a Jungian analyst on Cape Cod. As part of our ongoing series on alchemy, today, we are going to discuss the process of, which is already intuitive, is about separation. And, this is a very human psychological process of differentiating, discriminating, naming things, putting things in their proper place, of separating things into their distinctive, separate elements and having a way to order them, as part of our ego functioning. It is an intermediate process in some of the alchemical operations. It certainly is inherent in psychotherapy and certainly psychoanalysis. And, so with that as a prelude, let's start separating into our inherent parts, which is the three of us. And we will, to use another term, circumambulate separation. So let's just start with just the chemical realities. So the alchemists are these precursors to our modern chemists. They have a natural instinctive feeling that the objects around them, the stuff in the world is more than it seems to be. And if one could figure it out, one might discover either secret properties or this ability to extract or transform things. So it's not uncommon for the alchemist to take one thing, let's say, like a pulverized or of some kind or a mineral, and then to be able to add mercury and heat and this and that, and then discover that there are more than one element. That for instance, if you mix, mercury into pulverized or it will temporarily liquefy gold and put it into a suspension, the heavier or other elements rather will drop to the bottom. And then as it's heated and the mercury is vaporized off, gold will coat the inside of the vessel, and then the other elements that were not dissolved wind up collecting on the bottom. Mhmm. So that's an observable phenomena where a thing that was all mixed up in one powdery substance, now something valuable has been separated out from the original substance. This then becomes a metaphor that Jung found really fascinating. One thing, to make this practical, Deb, I was thinking about is you've often said on the podcast, you know, people come and they complain about something, but the thing that they're complaining about is never actually the thing. So we come with this with a problem, and then we discover by separating stuff out what is not actually relevant to my suffering and differentiating out the special bits of the issue that actually are contributing to my suffering. And that's the process of separatia, which we kind of do naturally when we're analyzing an issue. Yeah. In fact, the word …
