Key Takeaways
- ✓The Escalation Trap Framework: Strong powers attacking weaker ones often lose strategically even when winning tactically. Pape uses a roulette analogy: each failed bet (killing Iran's Supreme Leader, six-week air campaigns, blockades) forces a riskier double-down. Iran retained Strait of Hormuz control throughout, keeping 20% of global oil supply hostage and driving up U.S. gas prices — the real political cost bleeding Republican congressional support.
- ✓Violent Populism Thresholds: Over 40 million Americans currently support using the U.S. military to suppress Democratic protesters, while over 60 million support force to prevent Trump from governing. These figures have doubled since September 2024. Pape's national surveys show this combustible base only requires a single spark — a contested ballot count, a federal agent clash — to trigger cascading political violence resembling France's multi-city riots.
- ✓The Three-Day Iran Strike Plan: A Pentagon contingency targets Iranian missile sites, drone hubs, IRGC command centers, and energy infrastructure within 72 hours of a presidential go-code. Pape compares it directly to 1991's Operation Instant Thunder, which was planned as three days but ran 43 days, killed 5,000–15,000 Iraqi civilians, and never fully paralyzed Saddam's military — suggesting Iran's remaining forces would retaliate against Gulf state civilian infrastructure.
- ✓Putin's Territorial Calculus: After four years and a minimum of 250,000 confirmed Russian deaths, Russia has gained roughly 1% of Ukrainian territory and remains far from its annexed but uncontrolled oblasts. Putin cannot accept a symbolic deal — he needs Trump to deliver actual land. Since Zelensky surrendering territory would likely get him killed by his own military, Trump cannot deliver, making Russian winter infrastructure strikes on Kyiv, Kharkiv, and Odessa the probable next escalation step.
- ✓Inspired vs. Command-Directed Attacks: Pape distinguishes state-ordered attacks from inspired ones — individuals acting on shared grievance without direct orders. He assesses the Dubai-to-Tel Aviv co-pilot incident at 90% probability of being a suicide attack targeting Tel Aviv, based on timing (striking only 30 minutes from destination to avoid Israeli jet interception). This pattern follows mass civilian mobilization around Iran's Supreme Leader calling for revenge, creating a self-sustaining attack pool.
What It Covers
Political scientist Prof. Robert Pape, who has advised every U.S. White House since 9/11, maps an eight-week escalation scenario involving simultaneous U.S. midterm political violence, a post-election three-day bombing campaign against Iran, and Russian winter attacks on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure — arguing these three crises will interact and potentially converge toward a devastating 2027.
Key Questions Answered
- •The Escalation Trap Framework: Strong powers attacking weaker ones often lose strategically even when winning tactically. Pape uses a roulette analogy: each failed bet (killing Iran's Supreme Leader, six-week air campaigns, blockades) forces a riskier double-down. Iran retained Strait of Hormuz control throughout, keeping 20% of global oil supply hostage and driving up U.S. gas prices — the real political cost bleeding Republican congressional support.

These figures have doubled since September 2024. Pape's national surveys show this combustible base only requires a single spark — a contested ballot count, a federal agent clash — to trigger cascading political violence resembling France's multi-city riots.
- •The Three-Day Iran Strike Plan: A Pentagon contingency targets Iranian missile sites, drone hubs, IRGC command centers, and energy infrastructure within 72 hours of a presidential go-code. This pattern follows mass civilian mobilization around Iran's Supreme Leader calling for revenge, creating a self-sustaining attack pool.
- •Three Concrete Firebreaks: Pape proposes specific interventions: (1) Every current and newly elected Congress member publicly demands no Iran escalation until the new Congress is seated, unless Iran strikes first. (2) Every U.S. governor and mayor calls for a two-month moratorium on federally armed agents in their cities. (3) Pakistan, Qatar, and India — the current mediator bloc — jointly demand all parties halt direct targeting of civilian infrastructure. Citizens can accelerate this by contacting elected officials directly.
Notable Moment
When pressed repeatedly on White House contact, Pape — who has advised every administration since 9/11 — declined to confirm or deny advising the current one, but acknowledged that people in positions of power had reached out following his previous podcast appearances, and that he believed they were listening.

We are about to enter the eight most dangerous weeks in our lives, because the US midterms will determine the fate of President Trump's administration, and the most dangerous time is the transition of power. And we saw this with January 6th. And so what happens in this transition period could also easily dovetail in the Iran war, because President Trump has promised over and over again that he will escalate after the elections. Well, now we're after the elections. So let me show you what's really going to happen. But first, I've studied political violence around the world for 30 years, and I've advised every White House since 9-11. What do you think is going to happen then over these eight weeks? So let's start with the beginning. Will President Trump accept the election results, but also a plan that's on his desk? is a plan to hit targets in Iran over a three-day period. And as the Iran war is escalating, now we have the issue of this is a likely possible time when Putin is gonna start to realize he can't get Ukrainian territory from Trump. So he moves to his next plan, and I'll show you what that might look like. What happens next? There's going to be enormous pressure on Europe to retaliate. And when Europe does that, that's what World War III looks like. President Trump will be able to start declaring more and more emergency power. And this will lead into a devastating 2027. What can we do? And what about the general public? Do you think we should be stockpiling? Number one, incredibly important, which is Guys, I've got a favor to ask before this episode begins. Robert Pape, every time I speak to you, I feel like I start with the same question. But it is the question that is front of mind for me, which is, what the hell is going on in the world at the moment? What's going on is we are getting deeper and deeper into an escalation trap, and we are moving up rungs in escalation where risk is growing. And we are about to enter the eight most dangerous weeks since this war began, and they may become the eight most dangerous weeks in our lives. We are going to see the coming …
