Key Takeaways

  • ✓TESCREAL Decoded: The acronym represents seven overlapping ideologies — Transhumanism, Extropianism, Singularitarianism, Cosmism, Rationalism, Effective Altruism, and Long-termism — that form Silicon Valley's dominant worldview. Leaders including Sam Altman, Dario Amodei, Elon Musk, and Mark Zuckerberg operate within this framework. Understanding transhumanism as the foundation makes all other ideologies easier to interpret, since each is essentially a variant emphasizing different aspects of the same posthuman cosmic vision.
  • ✓Pro-Extinctionist Core: Every major TESCREAL faction shares a goal where biological humans disappear. In the "good" aligned-AI scenario, humans become obsolete because posthuman successors outperform them in every domain, then consume resources needed for cosmic expansion. Torres distinguishes terminal extinction (species disappears) from final extinction (no successors remain). TESCREAL advocates only oppose final extinction — many explicitly endorse terminal extinction as the desirable transition to a posthuman digital civilization.
  • ✓The Internal Schism Is Misleading: Public feuding between AI safety advocates and accelerationists creates a false impression of broad opposition to frontier labs. Both camps share identical end goals — posthuman cosmic utopia via superintelligence — and only dispute timing and alignment methodology. Congressional staffers and policymakers risk misreading this as external criticism when it is entirely an internal family dispute within Team Posthuman, leaving Team Human effectively unrepresented in the policy debate.
  • ✓Terminology Conceals Radical Positions: Words like "safety," "human extinction," and "human values" carry definitions inside TESCREAL that differ sharply from common usage. Safety means aligning AI to TESCREAL's worldview specifically. Human values means TESCREAL values. An AI aligned to any non-TESCREAL framework is classified as an existential catastrophe. When Anthropic employees cite a 10% human extinction probability, they are expressing concern about losing their utopian trajectory, not straightforward concern for preserving biological humanity.
  • ✓Self-Fulfilling Prophecy Dynamic: TESCREAL advocates did not predict the AI race — they created it. DeepMind received early funding after cofounders Shane Legg and Demis Hassabis spoke at Yudkowsky's Singularity Summit, then secured Peter Thiel investment. OpenAI formed specifically in response to DeepMind's perceived dominance. The network of funding, conferences, and personnel is entirely internal to TESCREAL. Crediting these figures with prescience about AI risk is equivalent to praising someone for accurately predicting they would make their own coffee.

What It Covers

Cal Newport interviews former AI doomer Emile Torres, a researcher who spent a decade inside transhumanist and effective altruist communities before defecting. Torres decodes the TESCREAL ideology bundle driving Anthropic and OpenAI, explaining how these labs pursue a posthuman digital utopia that explicitly excludes biological humans from the future they are building.

  • •Utilitarianism Enables Extreme Conclusions: Long-termism's total utilitarian foundation — maximizing value across all future digital beings estimated at 10^58 — mathematically justifies present harm at enormous scale. Yudkowsky has publicly stated he would accept global thermonuclear war killing billions if it prevented misaligned superintelligence, since minimum viable human population estimates run as low as 40,000 survivors. This reasoning mirrors twentieth-century utopian movements — Nazi and Soviet — where pursuit of an imagined future justified mass death, and none reached their stated utopia.

Notable Moment

Torres reveals that Yudkowsky, widely perceived as pro-human and anti-AI, has stated in interviews that once posthumanity arrives it may be unethical to continue having biological humans — and that sacrificing all of humanity to produce superintelligence capable of colonizing the universe would be an acceptable trade-off.

An argument that I've been making for a long time now is that if we really wanna understand what's happening in AI, we have to understand the futurist ideologies that are heavily influencing the top frontier labs, anthropic and open AI. The problem is is that these ideologies are confusing, and there's rumors swirling around them, and the excerpts we hear can sometimes be absurd, and we think that can't possibly be true. So I thought what would be useful is to bring in an insider to explain to us what is really happening in these labs and what do they truly believe. This is why I'm really happy to to have on the show this week, Emil Torres. Emil is a researcher and academic who focuses on eschatological and utopian movements. But what makes Emil really useful this discussion is that they used to be involved in these ideologies. Emile comes from the world of futurist ideologies that believed that superintelligent AI would either kill us all or redeem humanity with a posthuman digital god. But then Emile's moral compass led them out of that world, and now Emil has become, in my opinion, one of the most astute chroniclers, expositors, and critics of these ideologies. So Emil's gonna join me here in a second, and they're gonna walk us through what exactly are these different beliefs, how do they intersect, what is their role in the major frontier labs, and why should we be really worried about them? If you have any ambition to understand what's really happening in the world of AI, you need to listen to this conversation with Emil. It is going to quite frankly probably shock you, but this is a good shock. This message is one that we all need to hear. So let's get right into it. Emil, thank you for joining me on the show. Thanks for inviting me. Great to be here. I've been looking forward to this conversation for a long time. I think both your story and your research is being too overlooked in our current moment. I think it is very relevant to a lot of issues that people care about or are worried about or don't understand about the current A. I. Situation. And so I'm excited to really get into both the meat of your work as well as the origin story, which I think is very important. But I thought we should start briefly with definitions just so that everyone is on the same page when we're talking about these various movements. So can you explain what the acronym TESCREAL means? Yes, I can. So this was coined by myself during a collaboration with the computer scientist Timmy Gebru, which we initiated in, I think, late twenty twenty two or so. And we were specifically interested in the underlying ideological drivers behind the current race to build ASI or artificial superintelligence. So TESS Grill is is a a clunky kind of unsightly term, but …
