Key Takeaways
- ✓M6 vs M4 Mac Mini Performance: Real-world transcription workloads show the M6 Mac mini runs 20–30% faster than the M4 across 12-hour averages on mixed jobs combining Apple speech transcription and Parakeet fallback for unsupported languages. However, used M4 minis hold their value on eBay, narrowing the cost-per-performance gap. At current pricing, upgrading directly to M6 is likely the better economic choice rather than stacking additional M4 units.
- ✓iOS 27 Connectivity Assist Breaks Pi-hole: iOS 27 renamed Wi-Fi Assist to Connectivity Assist and enabled it by default. When a device receives no valid DNS response — as happens when Pi-hole blocks ad domains — iOS automatically reroutes those requests over cellular data, bypassing the local DNS filter entirely. Disabling Connectivity Assist in Settings restores Pi-hole functionality. Users running any local DNS-based ad blocker on Apple devices should disable this feature immediately after updating.
- ✓AirPods 5 Dual Listening Mode Settings: AirPods 5 maintain two completely separate listening mode configurations: one for single-AirPod use and one for both AirPods. These settings are independent and do not sync. If one-AirPod mode defaults to Transparency while two-AirPod mode is set to off, users will hear an audible audio shift when inserting the second AirPod. Fix this by inserting one AirPod, opening Control Center, setting the desired mode, then repeating with both AirPods inserted.
- ✓GM CarPlay Reversal Is Incomplete: Reports that GM reversed its CarPlay ban were inaccurate. The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra will support CarPlay, but only on gasoline-powered variants — GM had already committed to continuing CarPlay on ICE vehicles. Future GM EVs still will not support CarPlay or Android Auto. The distinction matters for buyers cross-shopping EV options. CarPlay availability now spans nearly all new cars, select motorcycles including the Honda Gold Wing, MasterCraft boats, and at least one waterproof shower-mounted device.
- ✓Apple Watch Siri Recap Is Ambient Surveillance: The Apple Watch Siri Recap feature continuously summarizes overheard conversations throughout the day without requiring user initiation, storing paragraph-length summaries in the Siri app. This differs fundamentally from the 15-second Rewind feature, which requires a deliberate double crown tap and discards audio if ignored. Recap operates as persistent ambient surveillance — analogous to a recording device left running — and may conflict with Washington State's all-party consent statute and similar laws in other jurisdictions.
What It Covers
ATP episode 711 covers M6 Mac mini performance benchmarks versus M4, iOS 27's Connectivity Assist feature bypassing Pi-hole ad blocking, GM's continued refusal to support CarPlay in EVs, Apple Watch audio surveillance concerns around the Siri Rewind and Recap features, AirPods 5 dual-mode listening settings, and the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital fundraising campaign.

- •CarPlay Ecosystem Leverage Against Holdouts: Tesla adding CarPlay support — which Apple's recent iOS changes appear to facilitate — would likely force Rivian and remaining holdouts to follow. Rivian's infotainment, regardless of quality, cannot replicate the breadth of third-party CarPlay apps: Overcast, Waze, Audible, Instapaper, WhatsApp, and AI provider apps all have CarPlay interfaces. No single automaker can build or maintain equivalent coverage. Buyers who want specific apps have no alternative but to choose a CarPlay-compatible vehicle.
- •macOS 28 Confirmed Inside macOS 27: Apple's macOS 27 system settings explicitly reference "macOS 28" in the Intel app deprecation warning, stating Rosetta support ends in that version. This is an unusually direct acknowledgment of a future OS by name, breaking Apple's standard practice of never confirming unreleased products. Developers and users with Intel-only apps can find a full list under System Settings
Notable Moment
During a live recording, one host began explaining why his wife was suddenly seeing excessive ads on her phone — the exact same Pi-hole bypass issue he had just finished describing. Her text message arrived mid-sentence, in real time, providing an unplanned live demonstration of the iOS 27 Connectivity Assist problem the episode had spent several minutes analyzing.

Alright. As you know, it is very important to me to never guess or BS about anything. Mhmm. Mhmm. So I have some actual data this time. I was... Oh gosh. It kind of bothered me last episode that I didn't have good performance numbers for the m six Mac minis in my transcript machines. So now that I... Well, the single single Mac mini in my... The one of 48 is an m six. And I'm happy to report that now I have actual numbers. So in this role of being my transcript machine, the m six over the m four is about 20 to 30% faster. Wow. So that's... So I now have actual numbers to say that, like, it is... It hovers between those two. Now keep in mind, these are doing more than just transcription. They're also now, thanks to Claude, using two different transcription models. I'm I'm now falling back to Parakeet for languages that Apple's speech transcribers don't support. So they're they're doing a lot more, but with that mixed workload over, like, twelve hours averages, you know, depending on when I look, it's between twenty and thirty percent difference. And now here's the question. How does that work out when you divide by price? Oh. Is it... In other words, is it still more economical to get more m fours? Well, at the price I paid for them back in the day, yes. But even even today's prices, presumably, you can get an m four mini for cheaper than an m six. Right? I mean, probably, but the difference might not be as big as you think. Like, used Mac minis always cost more than you think they will because there's always a market for used Mac minis, especially at the low end. Like, if you're, you know, if you're trying to sell a used Mac mini that's high specced, that cost you $2,000 when you bought it new, you're probably gonna lose some money on that. Whereas, if you just are trying to sell a base model that you got a good price on, you're probably not gonna lose that much money. Because the thing... Like, you know, because it is so important to so many people to just have a Mac, and the Mac mini is usually in many ways the cheapest way to do that, although the Neo throws a wrench in that plan. But there's... Is why used Mac minis when you go on eBay and stuff, they're never that much cheaper than the new ones, just because everybody wants them. So it's probably better for me to just buy m six's at this point, but it would probably be close, and if I compare it to what I was actually paying for these m fours, you know, a year and a half ago or a year ago, like, that was a very different situation. Like, because almost all of these... Like, their their list price was $600. I …
